4 tips for decorating seasonally when staging your home

Set some pumpkins by the front door to welcome prospective buyers.

If you are preparing your home for a sale, paying extra care to little details can help set your property apart in the minds of buyers. One way to make a great impression is to decorate seasonally when you have an open house. Locals in the greater Sacramento area love that we have four distinct yet mild seasons, so this time of year it's nice to give a little nod to fall.

Here are some tips for autumnal decorating when it comes to staging your house:

  • Consider fabrics: Fall is all about getting cozy at home, so include some warm fabrics like wool and cashmere. Toss an extra quilt on the bed and artfully arrange a throw blanket over the back of the couch. Your prospective buyers will never want to leave!
  • Just add color: It's time to transition from the happy, vibrant hues of summer to the richer, deeper colors of fall. Try deep shades of red, orange and brown accented with luxe gold or bronze accents. Traditional jewel tones like emerald, cobalt and eggplant are also lovely.
  • Scent matters: Autumn lays claim to some of the homiest smells, like pumpkin, cinnamon and apple cider. Consider burning a very mild, seasonally-appropriate scented candle. Just make sure it isn't too strong — you don't want to alienate visitors with allergies or perfume sensitivities.
  • Use restraint: You don't need to go overboard! When it comes to home staging, less is definitely more. (And remember that whatever you buy now you'll have to move later!) Just invest in a few accent pieces to take your home from summer to fall, such as decorative pillows, table runners and vases.
