4 tips for getting your home ready to sell

When you open your home to potential buyers, it should be as clean as a high-end hotel.

Anyone who has ever watched HGTV knows that presentation is key when it comes to successfully selling a home. Making even simple changes to improve your curb appeal can result in a much higher sale price at the end of the day. However, this can sometimes be easier said than done. It's easy to get bogged down in the details, but getting your home ready for a sale doesn't have to be an overwhelming process. Just keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Clean up: When you're showing a property to potential buyers, it should be as clean as a high-end hotel. If you don't have time to conduct a deep scrubbing, hire a cleaning service to come in and get everything spotless and shining. The expense will pay off in the long run.
  • Cut clutter: You're going to have to pack your belongings when you move anyway, so get ahead of the game by boxing up as much extraneous clutter as possible now. If you don't have your next home lined up, rent a short-term self-storage unit.
  • Remove personal items: This is difficult for some home owners, but you should do your best to hide family photos and any personalized, quirky design touches. You want your potential buyers to picture themselves living in the space, rather than you and your family.
  • Set the stage: Neutral yet stylish decor is ideal when selling a home, and remember not to overdo it. New York realtor Jerry Cibulski gives this great advice: "One talking point I use with sellers is from Coco Chanel: Once you complete your outfit, take one thing away," Cibulski told The Suffolk Times. "We want just enough accessories to tell a story."
