Cocker Art Museum brings holiday magic in December

Cocker Art Museum offers family-friendly holiday events throughout December.

The Cocker Art Museum was the first public art museum on the West Coast and features some of the best fine art from California, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Oceanic areas of the world. Through December, the museum dedicates much of its space to holiday celebrations, beginning with the Art Mix: Holidaze event and continuing throughout the month with holiday-themed art shows and a special showing of "The Sound of Music."

Established in 1885, Cocker is now the leading art museum in California and the primary regional resource for the study and appreciation of fine art. The museum is also accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, an honor given to less than 800 museums across the nation.

Here are a few of the events going on at the museum this December:

Art Mix: Holidaze – A celebration of the psychedelic and "trippy," Holidaze is a winter wonderland full of bizarre and unique art installations, vendors and music. These event will be held at the museum on December 11.

The first December Art Blast will be held on the 13, with a more holiday-focused event on the 30. The Art Blasts are held from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and are free for children under 7.

The Sound of Music Sing-Along – The museums annual sing-along to "The Sound of Music" will be on December 26. In its third year, this event features a costume contests, door prizes, goodie bags, yodeling and much more. Last year's event sold out, making it important for those considering attending to purchase their tickets early. Museum members can get tickets for $6, non-members for $12.

December Sketch It - The Sketch It events are held monthly to try and inspire children in artistic fields, allowing them to sit and draw some of the art installations throughout the museum with professional instruction from our staff. This drop-in even meets in a different gallery every month, and all supplies are provided by the museum. This holiday season's Sketch It will be on December 27.
