Broadway musical ‘Wicked’ coming to Sacramento

California Musical Theatre's summer series brings Broadway to Sacramento.

Local Broadway fans are thrilled to welcome the national touring production of Wicked, the musical, to Sacramento's Community Center Theater. Called "Broadway's biggest blockbuster" by The New York Times and "a cultural phenomenon" by Variety, Wicked has won more than 50 major accolades, including a Grammy and three Tony awards.

The musical is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, and begins long before Dorothy ever met the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion. It tells the early story of the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda the Good and their unlikely friendship.

"One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood," says the official Wicked website. "The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular."

California Musical Theatre (CMT) recommends the production for audiences over the age of 8, saying young children might find the flying monkeys too frightening and some narrative elements too complex. Themes of bullying, friendship and popularity will likely resonate with older kids.

The show will run three weeks, from May 28 through June 15, with 25 scheduled performances. Ticket prices range from $38 to $173.

CMT is presenting the musical as part of the annual Broadway Sacramento series. Every year, the series attracts theater enthusiasts from as far away as the Oregon border.
