Selling your home? 3 tips for making a great first impression

Make sure your front porch makes a good first impression on potential buyers.

Like it or not, first impressions matter, especially when it comes to selling your home! Here are some tips for putting your house's best foot forward:

Go digital

According to a recent report from the Today Show, the first impression for homebuyers often occurs online. Nowadays, many house hunters are starting their searches on the web, which means they may not even bother to come to your open house if they don't like the pictures they see on the digital listing. It's worth it to invest some time polishing your property's interior and exterior, and then take the best pictures you can, posting and sharing as many as possible. You might even want to consider hiring a professional photographer or enlisting the help of a friend who has Photoshop skills.

Let there be light

Nothing makes a better first impression than plenty of natural light. Open the blinds and if it's still a little dark, add a mirror opposite a window to reflect the sunshine. If you still need artificial lighting, use a combination of lamps and overhead fixtures. The latter alone can be too harsh.

See the closet half-full

Nobody wants to look at your disorganized closets, least of all a potential buyer. Storing things out of sight so that your storage spaces are only half full creates the illusion of room to spare.
