Ugly sweaters take over Sacramento

Ugly sweater runs and concerts help usher in the holiday spirit in Sacramento.

Christmas is known for eggnog, carols, presents and trees, but there's another item that few people are able to avoid during the holiday seasons — ugly sweaters. While some people hate the sight of a hand-made or store-bought sweater covered in Christmas cheer, others revel in it. As Christmas approaches, Sacramento celebrates the ugly sweater in it's own, little ways, such events dedicated to this holiday tradition.

On December 12, the Sacramento Ballet encourages patrons to leave the tuxedoes and evening gowns at home and wear their "favorite" ugly sweater to the night's performance of The Nutcracker. Hosted at the Community Center Theater, the Friday night performance begins at 7 pm. Visitors should wear their ugliest sweater and show off the true spirit of the holiday.

The following day, December 13, Sacramento hosts the Ugly Sweater Run, a 5k fun run navigates the William Land Park, with a celebration afterward for the runners. Participants are treated with a free beer, hot chocolate and an awards ceremony after, with prizes for best real mustache, best fake mustache, best beard, worst sweater and best sweater. Each Ugly Sweater runner receives a custom vintage knit hat, a drawstring bag and unlimited hot chocolate at aide stations throughout the course, according to the Ugly Sweater Run website.

In addition to the numerous celebrations, parades and concerts throughout Sacramento and the surrounding area this time of year, these two events are some of the fun ways residents spend the holidays in the River City.
