Old Sacramento’s Theater of Lights an excellent way to usher in the holidays

Old Sacramento's Theater of Lights celebrates the holidays and history of the city all-in-one.

The Theater of Lights brings out the rustic charms of Old Sacramento and combines old and new through cutting-edge lighting technology and the historic buildings of the River City. The sixth annual festival will be held from November 26 through December 31, with live-action retellings of the classic poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," and much more.

The poem was introduced to the city in 1957, published in The Sacramento Bee, and has become a time honored tradition throughout the city. Using lighting and actors, Old Sacramento will bring the poem to life on the rooftops of K Street, retold by Mark Twain himself (played by professional voice actor Bill Farmer, the voice of Disney's Goofy). Twain will also relay the history of Sacramento through the mid-1800's, including the tragedies that once befell the city, from floods to fires, and how it was rebuilt from the ashes.

The Theater of Lights will kick off on November 26 with a tree lighting ceremony and end New Year's Eve with a fireworks display. This free event is a must-not-miss part of the Christmas season in Sacramento, but there are many other holiday-centered events going on throughout the end of the year as well. At the Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink friends and families can enjoy annual ice skating for a mere $8 admission fee, and the Sacramento Ballet will be bringing its annual performance of "The Nutcracker" to the Community Center Theater from December 6-21 with 13 performances held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
