3 secrets of professional home stagers

Cutting clutter goes a long way toward creating a space anyone would love to live in.

If you are preparing to list your home on the market, take some time to make a strategy for putting your property's best foot forward. Try to look at your house through a stranger's eyes, and you'll likely start to notice little imperfections that you have grown used to over time.

Professional stagers are experts at fixing minor aesthetic issues to give residences major facelifts. However, you don't necessarily have to hire outside help! Just implement these tips and tricks and you'll be amazed at how much better your home looks:

  • Hide clutter: Store the vast majority of your family's clutter in a self-storage unit while your home is on the market. This will make the space seem bigger and more relaxing.
  • Lighten up: Tyler Whitmore, the owner of a staging company in Bethesda, Maryland, tells The Washington Post that bedrooms should feature light, clean color schemes to generate feelings of peace and serenity in potential buyers. Choose wall paint, bed linens and rugs in neutral tones like ivory, cream, light beige or very pale gray.
  • Weed out your house plants: Bethesda interior designer Kelley Proxmire tells The Post that you should cast a critical eye on all of your indoor plants. "I see forlorn sticks in dusty old pots scattered all over the place," she tells the source. "Be brutally honest. If the plant really doesn't look great, get rid of it."
