More than 400 acres of land along the North Fork of the American River is now permanently protected, thanks to the Placer Land Trust. The non-profit announced in a press release that it has purchased and preserved 417 acres across from Sore Finger Point at Big Bend.
The Placer Land Trust is designating the parcel the "Big Bend North Fork Preserve." It will be open to public for recreational use and permanently off-limits to residential and commercial developers.
"There is no higher or better use of this land than to keep it open and in the public trust," Placer Land Trust Executive Director Jeff Darlington said in the release. "Big Bend North Fork Preserve is one of our natural wonders, and we're very pleased to work with willing landowners and conservation partners to protect these natural wonders, now and forever."
Darlington said this is the fourth riverfront property the trust has protected along a 10-mile stretch of the American River above Lake Clementine, with the goal of keeping the area permanently scenic and wild.
The Sacramento Business Journal reports that the Placer Land Trust partnered with the Trust for Public Land to buy the parcel from a local developer for $1.368 million. The California Natural Resources Agency contributed grant money for the purchase.
The Placer Land Trust said it eventually plans to transfer management of the land to California State Parks, as part of the Auburn State Recreation area.
According to the non-profit, close to a million visitors use the area's rivers and trails every year. Placer County residents are lucky to have such amazing recreation opportunities and awe-inspiring natural beauty right in their own backyard.
