Northern California community named one of best small town destinations

Sacramento locals are just a short drive from some of the best travel destinations in the country.

Smithsonian Magazine has named a community just a couple of hours from Sacramento as one of the two best small town destinations in America. The new list, called "The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2014," praises Healdsburg for its agricultural resources, emphasis on locally grown, clean and organic food and sophisticated design sensibility.

"A fine-food store, Shed, recently moved into a breathtaking glass-encased barn downtown," says Smithsonian Magazine. "Co-owner Cindy Daniel experiments with organic fermented beverages called shrubs and welcomes local farmers to gather as they once did in Grange halls all across rural America."

With national travel writers urging Americans from all over the country to visit this Northern California gem, residents of Sacramento, El Dorado and Placer Counties are lucky to be only a short drive away. As a visitor to Healdsburg, you can enjoy music, shopping, art, local wine and gourmet farm-to-table meals. Recreation enthusiasts can take advantage of the area's natural beauty by cycling, golfing, canoeing, kayaking and rock climbing. Beautiful beaches and parks provide families with kid-friendly activities like whale watching and picnicking. Wider Sonoma County is also a major wedding destination and one of the best places in the state to take a winery tour.

Next time you are entertaining loved ones from out-of-state or are just in need of a mini-vacation, consider making a day-trip to this beautiful small town. For overnight trips, check out Healdsburg's many charming inns, or reserve a site at the nearby camping grounds.
