Placer and El Dorado Counties named two of nation’s healthiest for kids

Placer County and El Dorado County are two of the healthiest areas in the country for kids.

U.S. News and World Report is heralding Placer County and El Dorado County as two of the 50 healthiest areas in the nation for American children. Placer County came in 17th, and El Dorado County claimed the 43rd spot on the list.

The rankings consider factors like number of infant deaths, injury-related childhood deaths and teen births. The analysts also considered infant birth weights, health insurance and medical care access, air quality and child poverty rates. Some adult factors determined to influence kids' health were also accounted for, including adult smoking and obesity rates.

This is the second year that U.S. News has developed the list of healthiest counties for kids, with the help of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The institute monitors health trends across the country as part of its County Health Rankings and Roadmap program. Earlier this year the program named Placer County as the second healthiest county in all of California.

"You need to give people options to make the healthy choice the easy choice," program director Bridget Catlin said. "That's why we think it's important to look at factors like people's behaviors, education and income, and making sure there are places to exercise."
