Hike with man’s best friend in El Dorado

Take your dog on a hike to increase your fitness level and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

If you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, then try taking your best canine friend on a hike in beautiful El Dorado County at the next opportunity.

Debbi Preston, a local author and dog lover, recently discussed her passion for hiking in a trail presentation at the California Welcome Center in El Dorado Hills. She pointed out that dogs are especially good hiking partners for people who made New Year's resolutions to get in shape.

"Socially, I find that hiking with your dog is more fun," Preston told a reporter from the Folsom Telegraph. "They are like little kids and get so excited on the trail. They are always eager to go. They will always be a good, positive support to get healthy rather than an unmotivated friend."

Preston recommends keeping your dog on a leash and bringing plenty of fresh water for them to drink on the trail. She also said that you should be prepared to run into joggers, horses and other dogs and hikers, so don't bring your pup if it shows aggressive behavior. You should also make sure your dogs are protected from ticks, and pay attention to them during the hike so you notice if they become fatigued.

Most dogs love getting to explore new territory and meet new people and animals, so this should be a great activity for the both of you. El Dorado has a number of year around, dog-friendly hiking trails, which you can find here. You can also call the California Welcome Center at (916) 358-370 if you need more information.

El Dorado is full of natural beauty, and hiking is the perfect way to experience the stunning views, calming atmosphere and friendly people. Oh, and your dog will love it too!
