Memorial Day weekend is a great time for outdoor enthusiasts to get back in touch with the natural world. Celebrate the official arrival of summer by unplugging in one of the dozens of gorgeous wilderness areas within driving distance of California's capital region.
The hardest part of planning a wilderness weekend is deciding which beautiful destination to choose. Sunset Magazine suggests pitching a tent on the west shore of Lake Tahoe in D.L. Bliss State Park, just an hour and a half from El Dorado County and a couple of hours from Sacramento. Or head the opposite direction to soak in the dramatic coastal beauty at Russian Gulch State Park. For a weekend of family fun and kid-friendly activities, try Yosemite National Park, about four miles southeast of the capital.
Here are a few tips from the California Department of Parks and Recreation for enjoying your time off the grid safely:
Hydrate: Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if you are hiking. Avoid spending too much time in direct sunlight.
Prevent forest fires: Start campfires in designated, fire-approved rings and pits only. Observe proper fire safety measures at all times.
Wear a life jacket: When recreating on water, it is imperative that you wear a life jacket. In some areas, personal flotation devices are required by law. Be sure that children's life jackets fit snugly and securely.
