4 million renters say they want to buy a home in the next year

Recent data reveals that 4 million renters hope to become homeowners in the next year.

Last week, real estate research firm Zillow published a press release announcing the results of its latest Zillow Housing Confidence Index (ZHCI), which revealed that 10 percent of renters nationwide hope to become homeowners in the next year. According to the source, this figure equates to approximately 4.2 million people. However, there are a number of obstacles that stand in the way of these individuals accomplishing their goal. For example, inventory remains historically low throughout the country, meaning competition is high for prospective buyers.

"Even after a wrenching housing recession, this data shows that the dream of homeownership remains very much alive and well, even in those areas that were hardest hit," Zillow's chief economist, Stan Humphries, said in a press statement. "But these aspirations must also contend with the current reality, and in many areas, conditions remain difficult for buyers. The market is moving toward more balance between buyers and sellers, but it is a slow and uneven process."
