
Throughout October, Sacramento celebrates the "Day of the Dead," or Dia de los Muertos, in an examination of the city's culture and history.
The Souls of the City event is a month-long celebration of of the past. Modeled off of Dia de los Muertos, the city dedicates three Saturdays in October to related events, ended by a full Day of the Dead festival on November 1. The rest of the month is dedicated to educational lectures, workshops and classes exploring the rich history of California, Mexico and the Aztec culture rooted deep through the area.
Pop Up Art Lab Workshops
October 11: Mini Altars
The first major event will be the pop up art lab workshop where attendees can create their own mini Day of the Dead altars. This workshop will be held at the Stanford Gallery, 111 I Street.
October 18: Papel Picado and Paper Flowers
The following Saturday the Stanford Gallery will host the Papel Picado and Paper Flowers workshop, where visitors can learn to make traditional Mexican paper flowers and festive paper-cut banners.
October 25: Decorated Calaveras
The last major workshop of the month will be teach attendees how to make the traditional calaveras, or skulls, that are prominent throughout the Day of the Dead festival. This workshop will be held at the Old Sacramento State Historic Park.
In addition to these three workshops, the Honoring Our Past Community Lecture will be held on Thursday, October 23. This class will explore the history and meaning of Dia de los Muertos in the Native American community at the Sacramento History Museum.
The closing Dia de los Muertos celebration on November 1 will feature Aztec Dancers, or Kalpulli Maquilli Tonatiuh, as well as community altars, and an exhibit of the pieces created at the pop up art workshops, family games and activities, face painting, live music and much more.
The Soul of the City month-long festival is just one of the many attractions hosted in Old Sacramento throughout the year. These family-friendly events are long-held traditions in the Sacramento area, and part of what makes it such an amazing place to raise children. Other amazing events held through the city include: the Celebration of The Magical Arts 3-day magic festival in October, the Pacific Rim Street Festival in May, the Sacramento Music Festival also held in May, Americana in Old Sacramento held at the end of August and the Theatre of Lights events held throughout November and December.
