Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Head to the Sacramento River to watch the 64th Opening Day Boat Parade and help kick off the local boating season.
The parade is set to last about two hours, beginning at the Sacramento Yacht Club at noon. The boats will move up the river through Old Town, turning around at the Virgin Sturgeon restaurant. You can watch the parade from anywhere along the river, but the yacht club recommends finding seats at the West Sacramento River Park. Its picnic tables, promenade and grand staircase provide plenty of places for groups to sit and watch the water parade.
The theme of this year's parade is Banners 'n Bling. Prizes will be awarded to boats in four different categories determined by length — under 30 feet, 30 to 35 feet, 36 to 40 feet and 41 feet and longer. All boaters are also eligible to win the Best Costume Award, Rear Commodore Theme Award and SYC Overall Winner Award.
This year's judging panel includes Bill Wells, Executive Director of the California Delta Chambers and Visitors Bureau, JC Cloward, Director of Events for the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Anna Maisyan, local boating enthusiast. The awards ceremony will take place immediately following the parade at the Sacramento Yacht Club.
