Here in the Sacramento area, we're lucky to live near some of the most renowned golf courses in the world. Whether you're a longtime golf enthusiast like myself or a budding fan of the sport, check out one of these courses next time you feel like hitting the links:
DarkHorse Golf Club
Placer County's DarkHorse was honored by Golf Magazine as one of the "Best Public Golf Courses in California." A beautiful par-72 course, DarkHorse has varied elevation thanks to its location in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.
Granite Bay
Just a 10- to 15-minute drive from Rocklin, Granite Bay is a private course that's a favorite with many local golfers. Natural lakes, granite outcroppings and heavily wooded areas create a unique and beautiful place to play 18 holes.
Haggin Oaks Golf Complex
The Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento boasts not one, but two championship golf courses, along with a 100-stall, lighted driving range that's open 24 hours in the summer season. The Alister MacKenzie course was named one of the area's best by local news affiliate CBS Sacramento. The less challenging Arcade Creek is an ideal course for beginners.
Saddle Creek
Saddle Creek in Copperopolis boasts a 6,800-yard course and an abundance of beautiful views. According to Golf Magazine, water is in play here on at least nine holes. Just an hour and a half from Folsom in Sacramento County, a stay at the Saddle Creek Lodge or in one of the resort's bungalows makes for a great weekend getaway.
Teal Bend
Built along the Sacramento River, the public Teal Bend course lays claim to the city's largest all-grass driving range.
