54th Folsom Pro Rodeo pays tribute to California’s cowboy heritage

Check out the 54th annual Folsom Pro Rodeo on the Fourth of July.

If you'll be in Sacramento County over the Fourth of July, be sure to check out the Folsom Pro Rodeo! A regional tradition, the rodeo is celebrating its 54th anniversary, making it one of California's longest running community events. The rodeo celebrates our gold rush heritage and the cattle ranches that used to dot the Folsom foothills.

Festivities kick off July 2 when a parachute performer will land in historic Folsom, signaling the start of the annual Cattle Drive. You and your family can stand on the sidewalks along Sutter Street to watch the parade of longhorn cattle, cowboys and cowgirls, the historic Wells Fargo stagecoach and rodeo clowns. The parachutist is scheduled to land at Sutter and Wool Streets.

On Thursday, July 3, the gates open at 6 p.m. for an evening of bull roping, bronco riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling and even some daredevil motocross tricks. Be sure to check out the always entertaining mutton busting, in which area kids ride or race sheep! The whole family is sure to love the silver dollar dig and the antics of the rodeo clowns. The rodeo will also have live music and delicious food. Fireworks displays are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 9:30 p.m.

I used to work at the rodeo as a volunteer for the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, and I can tell you that this is one of my very favorite events in our region! Events like the Folsom Rodeo help make Sacramento County a great community with a rich history and heritage.
