Open house etiquette: How to behave when shopping for a home

Be sure to observe some basic etiquette principles when viewing a property for sale.

If you've ever sold your home, you probably know that opening it up to strangers can be a little stressful. Next time you attend an open house, follow these simple etiquette pointers to ensure both you and the seller have a positive experience:

  • Welcome: Come on in! There's no need to knock or ring the doorbell. Just be sure to wipe your feet before entering and observe any requests made by your host, such as removing shoes at the door.
  • Meet the agent: Generally the owner of a home isn't present at an open house. Instead you'll likely see the real estate agent who is showing the property. He or she is there to help and provide you with information, so feel free to ask questions. For serious buyers, it's appropriate to let him or her know if you are already working with your own agent.
  • Sign in: If the open house has a guest book or registry, leave your name so the property owners know who has been in their home. If you don't wish to be contacted, just omit your phone number.
  • Be respectful: Don't open closed doors or drawers without asking, and keep in mind that it's never appropriate to look through someone's clothes or personal belongings.
  • Use tact in asking questions: It's important to ask the realtor pointed questions and consider a property's pros and cons, but be sure not to insult the home in front of the current owners.
  • Ask before taking pictures: Remember that this is still someone else's home. It's often OK to take pictures for your reference, but be sure to check with the agent first.
