It's no secret around here that I am a golf enthusiast. In fact, I think one of the best parts of living in California is easy access to so many beautiful fairways! If you're a proud new homeowner, or even if you're putting your home on the market and hoping to up your curb appeal, you may have wondered just how to get your lawn glowing like the ninth hole at DarkHorse. Here are some tips for achieving golf course perfection right in your own backyard:
Aim for the fairway, not the green
According to MarketWatch, putting greens are cut every day to an even height of an eighth of an inch. Most people don't have time to mow their yard daily, and experts say it's actually better for the grass to leave it longer. Higher grass, between two-and-a-half and three inches, has deeper roots and is heartier, healthier and more resistant to weeds.
Deeper watering is better than frequent watering
Lawn experts recommend giving grass one inch of water a week for optimum health. Invest in a rain gauge to keep track of how much moisture your lawn is getting. When local water restrictions allow, supplement rain with water from your sprinklers or hose. Generally, watering grass deeply every so often is better than giving it frequent, small amounts of water.
Don't throw out the baby with the bath water
According to the Daily Mail, a Minnesota man learned this lesson the hard way, when he accidentally killed all the grass on his 40,000 square foot lawn using pre-emergent weed killer! Read labels carefully, and proceed with caution.
