3 tips for decorating your first home

When decorating a new home, it's a good idea to start with the bedroom.

Becoming a homeowner for the very first time is an exciting milestone, but there's a lot to think about as you prepare to inhabit your new residence. In a recent HGTV article, Laura McDonald of the American Society of Interior Designers shares the following advice for decorating your first house:

  • Begin with the bedroom - "It's where you'll be spending almost a third of your time when you're at home, after all," writes McDonald. "If you're on a tight budget, opt for new bedding first, but don't skimp on thread count! Buy as well as you can afford to spend in this area — it makes a huge difference. If you have a little more money, paint the bedroom walls to complement your new bedding."
  • Make big purchases gradually – According to McDonald, you should live in your new home for at least a few months before making any large purchases. Why? Because that will give you enough time to figure out exactly what you need and how you would like to decorate your space. Once you move in, keep a list of everything you hope to buy so you can prioritize.
  • Purge unwanted belongings - Moving into your first home gives you the opportunity to truly start over. There's no need to drag that old futon or wobbly table to your new place. Be realistic about what you absolutely want to keep and what you can get rid of. McDonald suggests purging 25 to 50 percent of your old belongings before you move.
