You have probably heard by now that California is in the midst of a serious drought, and that has Sacramento Parks and Recreation Department Director Jim Combs declaring that "gold is the new green." Combs recently shared the new catchphrase with local TV news outlet FOX-40, urging area residents to abstain from watering their lawns in the interest of conserving water.
"With watering limited to two days a week in the peak of summer, the grass is not dying, but it is stressed," Combs told the station. "Gold grass should green up again with cooler temperatures and, hopefully, rain in the fall. But for now, we want to keep imploring everyone to do their part – even if it's not pretty."
In other words, embrace the golden color in your landscaping and take pride in doing your part to conserve water!
Some Californians are reportedly keeping a close eye on their neighbors watering habits, going so far as to "shame" them on social media if they notice that they're running their sprinklers or garden hose too often. According to a recent report in The New York Times, Sacramento has gotten more than 6,000 reports of inappropriate water use this year, twenty-fold more than the same period in 2013.
While we don't recommend alienating your neighbors, it is a good idea to encourage each other to use less water. The city of Sacramento is even giving out lawn signs declaring that "gold is the new green," so you can share your commitment to the environment with the community!
