According to new data from the National Homebuilders Association, as reported by EcoBuilding Pulse, more and more people seem to be seeking eco-friendly properties when they shop for a home. Here in California, many of us make green living a priority, but it can be hard to know just what to look for when buying a new property. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Ask the air conditioner's age
Today's air conditioning units are up to 25 percent more efficient than ones manufactured 20 years ago, according to San Diego real estate agent Linda Lee. The age of a home's unit will influence your carbon footprint and how much you spend on electric bills.
Check appliances
Often a new home will come with old appliances, so check to see what you're getting when it comes to the stove, freezer and refrigerator. According to MSN.com, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends replacing any appliance that is more than 10 years old. The most energy-efficient options often come with the EPA's Energy Star designation, which indicates that an appliance uses between 10 and 50 percent less energy and/or water than its typical counterparts. Of course, you can always replace old appliances yourself, but it's best to factor that into your decision, and ultimately, your bid.
Plan your garden
If you want to grow a vegetable garden in your yard, be sure to keep that in mind as you shop. Ask questions about the yard's soil and exposure to sunlight, and think about if and where on the lot you could grow produce.
